Course Outline
This module will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to understand the safety requirements when handling an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), as well as the skills to use an AED within the first minutes after a cardiac arrest.
If this course is combined with 21660VIC Course in Basic Oxygen Administration, the competency HLTFA404A Apply Advanced Resuscitation Techniques is achieved.
Course Competencies
At the successful completion of this course the candidate will demonstrate competence in:
- Explain why Early Defibrillation and the 'Chain of Survival' are essential and explain the Structure & Function of the Heart.
- Manage a cardiac arrest using an Automatic External Defibrillator - (AED).

Course Requirements
- Must wear closed in shoes
- Due to the practical components of the course, participants are advised to wear comfortable casual attire.
Assessment
You will be assessed at the end of the course to show your instructor that you have an appropriate understanding of the procedures necessary to manage a life-threatening situation.
- Theory Assessment paper
- Resuscitation demonstration using an AED
Successful participants will receive a Statement of Attainment certificate issued by Australian First Aid. In the interest of maintaining your knowledge of Automatic External Defibrillators, STM advises you formally renew your skills annually.
